Teeth Scaling and Polishing

We all know that regular dental cleaning keeps your teeth and gums healthy, but we also understand that these types of cleanings can positively impact your overall well being. Plaque and tartar can build up on teeth over time, and skipping routine cleanings can result in not only an unhealthy mouth but an unhealthy body. There’s help available in the form of teeth scaling, a procedure dental hygienists use to remove tartar (calculus) buildup. Polishing, which removes stains and plaque, completes a thorough teeth cleaning. These procedures promote healthier teeth and gums, whole-body wellness, and greater confidence in a brighter and healthier smile.

Good Oral Hygiene for Your Health

Bleeding or sore gums, gums that pull away from the teeth, and constant bad breath are signs that you have buildup present. This buildup comes from bacteria flourishing in your mouth, leaving behind a thick, sticky substance that attaches and hardens to your teeth. This bacteria and plaque can also travel into the bloodstream, putting you at a higher risk for heart disease and cancer. An unhealthy mouth can lead to tooth loss, speech issues and chewing difficulties.

Be Confident, On or Off Screen

Having a healthy mouth and fresh breath does have an impact on everyday life. Whether you are socializing online or in person, you just feel more confident after periodontal scaling and polishing. And knowing that you are improving your overall health through these procedures gives you the emotional and mental boost needed to face the world.

FAQ's

Teeth scaling vs. Teeth Polishing

Scaling removes any buildup on the tooth's surface, both above and below the gum line. The term scaling refers to scraping and pulling off this material (and what your insurance will refer to it as). However, modern techniques are less invasive.

Teeth polishing involves removing bacteria and stains on and between teeth and also leaves the teeth feeling smooth. Both these procedures are part of a typical dental visit with your hygienist.

 Can I remove tartar myself?

Once tartar is present on your teeth, it's not recommended to try to remove it yourself. However, there are ways to help prevent the buildup, such as brushing twice a day (preferably with an electric toothbrush), flossing, and limiting sugary foods. Health First Dental Hygiene will customize an at-home routine just for you.

How much does scaling cost?

We follow the Ontario Dental Hygienists' Association's suggested fee guide for services. Your cost will depend on several factors, including the condition of your teeth and gums, the procedure performed and how long it takes to complete it. Please call or email for further information.

What if I need further care?

Health First Dental Hygiene works collaboratively with all fields of healthcare and can make any necessary referrals to help ensure you achieve total body wellness.

What is Myo-Functional Therapy?

Referred to as “physiotherapy for your face,” myofunctional therapy uses highly effective exercises to improve breathing, bite malalignment and facial posture. These effective exercises are used to treat: mouth breathing, underdeveloped facial growth, orthodontic concerns and relapse, teeth grinding, TMJ dysfunction, speech problems and tongue-tie concerns. A thorough assessment is completed and Health First Dental Hygiene will customize a program for your individual needs. And, if you have a young one with a pacifier or thumb / finger sucking concern, ask us about our habit-breaking programs.
